League of Legends vs. Dota 2?
Let’s cut right to the chase. DFC Intelligence recently claimed that Dota 2 had surpassed League of Legends as the most played “core” PC title (in the west) during these first few months of 2013. While this news may have been riveting for Dota 2 fans everywhere, there is a major question to be asked: What numbers were they looking at in order to arrive at such a bold statement?
To put things into perspective once again, i’m looking at the first source of information that came to mind regarding the popularity of League of Legends, which is Twitch.tv. Right now on 4/14/2013 at 2:55 PM Central, there are 105,541 viewers on Riot Games watching the LCS 2013 EU Spring W9D2, in “English”. The most viewers I could find on any single Dota 2 channel a few minutes later was 12,507 viewers of ThePremierLeague (Kaipi vs. Alliance). There are also just over 10,000 people watching FnatiC play Empire on ThePremierLeagueRU. Two other Dota 2 channels are at just under 5,000 viewers as i’m typing this. I’m sure you can do the math. After all, you were smart enough to visit ReadyUp Gaming, weren’t you?
Yes, a quick comparison like that contains many variables and is not conclusive, so we should look at some solid “concurrent player” numbers. Riot have stated that League of Legends “sees over 500,000 peak concurrent players every day on just the EU west shard.” According to SteamGraph, Dota 2’s highest concurrent player count was 325,897 users worldwide. So, again, what were the DFC going by when they made this announcement?
Well, here’s your answer. DFC’s David Cole says their findings were based on hours played instead of concurrent players. I’d like to add that this can simply mean Dota 2 players slurp down more energy drinks than LoL players. Cole added, “LoL does have alot more users and we may have underestimated LoL. Thing is we have never seen anything like it so we have been pretty conservative. But Dota 2 is still big.” Really, guys? Why was there an “estimation” in the first place?
By the way, Riot Games channel (LCS 2013 EU Springs W9D2) has gone up from 105,541 viewers to just under 120,000 viewers in the last 30 minutes before going off air.
